Apple Music Drops Their Own Version Of "The Defiant Ones" With Trailer For "Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives"

Variety  - The documentary “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival back in April, will debut exclusively on Apple Music on Oct. 3, with a limited theatrical release in select cities starting on Sept. 27. The film, which was directed by Chris Perkel, examines life and career of Clive Davis in great detail.

Not going lie, I didn’t know who Clive Davis was until this trailer. I’d heard the name but I’d never seen the face. He’s had a hand in the careers of everyone from Biggy Smalls and Outkast to Carlos Santana and Billy Joel.  Clive is one of these behind-the-scenes guys who’s had an enormous impact on American culture and musical direction. He essentially molded the rock revolution of the late sixties by signing Janis Joplin, then saw it through the seventies with the addition of bands like Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen. I’m not even going to get into what he did for funk with Sly and the Family Stone or R&B with Whitney Houston.

Clive is like a Jimmy Iovine- everyone in the music industry knows him, but the vast majority of regular people don’t. They have no idea that he’s the guy responsible for that song that played at their wedding or the hit that brings back memories of their favorite summer. His work has no doubt been involved in some of the most intimate and personal experiences of millions of people’s lives. It’s a mind fuck to think about. His job was to make people feel and he’s been doing it for over fifty years. Hell, half of you reading this were probably conceived to a Clive Davis song.

Whether or not this is a response to HBO’s The Defiant Ones is unclear but I don’t care. The trailer looks unreal. As soon as Santana started playing I was hooked. I’m not sure if it will be able to top The Defiant Ones but I’m going to give it a shot.

Live look at me (skip to 1:42) on the way to “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives.”
